Vision care for the whole family

Supporting clear, comfortable, and efficient vision to meet the demands of everyday life.

Family

Our practice in Oude Westhof Cape Town, offers comprehensive optometric care using a behavioral approach to vision. We work with children, adults and athletes, assessing not only eyesight and eye health, but also how vision functions in everyday activities.

What is a behavioural approach to vision?

A behavioural approach to vision recognises that vision is an active process involving the eyes, brain, and body. While clear eyesight is important, functional vision also includes skills such as eye coordination, focusing ability, tracking, and visual processing.

When visual skills aren't working efficiently, you may experience:

Challenges with Reading & Learning

Concentration Issues

Headaches & Eye Strain

Poor Balance & Coordination

Inconsistent Sports Performance

Our Approach to Better Vision

By evaluating how visual skills are used in real-world situations, we identify underlying visual inefficiencies and guide appropriate management strategies.

Vision Therapy

Vision Therapy

Vision Therapy

While glasses are enough for many people, some vision challenges are not resolved with glasses or contact lenses alone Vision therapy is a personalised, guided process that helps improve how the eyes and brain work together. It supports the development of visual skills needed for comfortable reading, sustained attention, coordination, and everyday performance.

Who Can Benefit from Vision Therapy?

Vision therapy may be helpful for children and adults with:

  • Learning related Vision problems
  • Stress- related Visual problems
  • Poor binocular coordination including Convergence insufficiency
  • Amblyopia (lazy eye), Diplopia (double vision) and strabismus (turned eye)
  • Individuals recovering from concussion or Traumatic brain injury
  • Patients wanting to improve visual coordination for sport or daily activities

What Does the Process Involve?

We begin with a comprehensive visual assessment to understand how your visual system is functioning. From there,we will advise if lenses or therapy alone is required. We will then create an individualised therapy programme that may include activities to support:

  • Eye tracking
  • Focusing flexibility
  • Eye coordination
  • Visual-motor integration

Vision therapy is provided either by an Occupational Therapist with additional training in vision development, working under optometric guidance or by the optometrist themselves. This allows us to take a more integrated, whole-person approach. Progress happens gradually, with regular guidance, support, and practice both in and out of the office.

How Long Does Vision Therapy Take?

Vision therapy is not a one-size-fits-all process. The length of a programme varies depending on individual needs, goals, and consistency with home practice. Some patients notice changes within a few weeks, while for others, progress builds more gradually over time. We focus on steady, meaningful improvement rather than fixed timelines.

Our Approach

At Vision in Balance Optometry, we look beyond symptoms to understand how vision is functioning within the bigger picture. We value a collaborative approach and often work alongside parents, teachers, and other professionals to support each patient in a way that is practical, supportive, and sustainable.

Let’s Get Started

If you or your child are experiencing vision-related challenges, we’re here to help. Book a consultation and let’s explore how we can support more comfortable, efficient vision.

Primitive Reflexes

Primitive Reflexes

Primitive Reflexes & Vision

Primitive reflexes are early reflexive movements that develop in utero and early infancy. They play an important role in early development, helping babies respond to their environment and begin building the foundation for movement, coordination, and sensory processing. Some reflexes are activated during the birth process and variations such as Caesarean delivery or birth-related stress may impact this process.

As children grow, these reflexes are typically integrated as the brain matures. One helpful way to think about this is like a filing system - once the body has learned what it needs from a reflex, it is "filed away" so that higher-level skills can take over.

In some cases, reflexes may not fully integrate, or they may become more noticeable again during times of stress, illness, or neurological disruption. When this happens, they can begin to interfere with how the body and visual system work together.

How Do Primitive Reflexes Affect Vision?

Vision is closely connected to movement and posture. When reflexes are still active, children may need to use extra effort to maintain stability, focus, and coordination - which can make visual tasks like reading and learning more demanding.

This may present as:

  • Difficulty sitting still or maintaining posture
  • Challenges with eye tracking when reading
  • Reduced visual attention or concentration
  • Coordination difficulties
  • Fatigue during near tasks

Our Approach

At Vision In Balance, we consider how retained primitive reflexes may be contributing to visual and learning challenges as part of a broader assessment.

We use an RMTi (Rhythmic Movement international) approach, involving gentle, repetitive movement patterns aimed at supporting the integration of retained reflexes and improving coordination between the body, brain, and visual system.

This work is always individualised and may be incorporated alongside vision therapy, depending on each child’s unique needs.
